Parents are Mostly Verbal Abuse Actors on Children in East Nusa Tenggara

Abstract

Background. Child abuse in East Nusa Tenggara Province is in the emergency category and ranks fourth in 34 provinces in Indonesia. Children's rights according to UU 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection have not been a concern of the people of East Nusa Tenggara. Violence against children is known that consist of two forms they are physical violence and non-physical violence. Verbal violence that is violence carried out through words, example yelling, cursing, insulting, dubbing, shouting, slandering, spreading gossip, accusing, rejecting by harsh words, public humiliation. The impact of violence is that children become individuals who lack confidence, vengeful, aggressive and have defiant behavior such as withdrawing from the environment, abusing drugs and alcohol, even tend to commit suicide. Every child violence must be prevented because it affects the child and the child's mental damage. Method of the research. Violence against children research uses a cross-sectional method samples were taken in three districts namely Kupang Regency, East Sumba District, and Manggarai District. The sample was taken by the proportional Cluster random sampling technique. the number of samples is 282 parents who have children under 18 years old. the study was conducted in 2017. The analysis used bivariate description statistics and multiple Logistic regression. The result. Maltreatment action on children in East Nusa Tenggara more occurs in these two types, physical and verbal Violence, while there is not too much sexual and psychological violence.  Bivariate analysis showed that the five Children's Rights significantly affected child abuse. The calculation with multiple Logistic regression found that only 4 Children's Rights (except, developing rights) were related to parents’ caring behavior (p= 0,000). Such developing model shows 41% of the causes of four children's rights. 59% is determined by other factors, such as socio-cultural, socio-economic, environmental and parent’s factors (education, parenting, etc.) Conclusion and Suggestions. East Nusa Tenggara child abuse is dominated by verbal violence. Although verbal Violence is non-physical it has impacts on mental health problems. Parenting needs to be improved. Hugging a child periodically with great love has an effect on nourishing a child’s soul.
