Analgesic Activity of Water Extract of Binahong (Anredera Cordifolia (Ten.) V. Steenis) Leaves on Swiss Webster Mice

Abstract

Pain is a symptom of disease with high prevalence in the world. One model for therapy that may have benefit in reducing pain is using binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) v. Steenis) leaves, which was traditionally used by the community. There was no study that proved the analgesic activity of binahong leaves, but many types of research were performed scientifically for many diseases. This research aimed to prove the peripheral analgesic activity of binahong leaves scientifically and to determine the effective dose that could provide activity. Extraction was conducted by reflux method. The analgesic peripheral activity of water extract of binahong leaves with doses of 50 mg/kg bw, 100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw were performed which induced by acetic acid 0.6 % (Siegmund method). This study showed that all doses of water extract of binahong leaves had an analgesic activity which was significantly different with control (p<0,05). Water extract of binahong leaves with doses of 100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw had the highest analgesic activity which was not significantly different compared to aspirin. Writhing numbers of doses 100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw respectively were 29.60 ± 13.45 and 26.60 ± 11.89 compared to aspirin 21.00 ± 23.21 and % protection of doses 100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw respectively were 65.90 and 69.35 compared to aspirin 75.81.
