Abstract

Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW) become one important indicator in determining the success of labor. Midwives are able to estimate the fetal weight using various methods which has closest estimation to the actual birth weight, so that it will reduce the risk of childbirth and labor complications. Several methods can be use to measure EFW, such as Dare Method and pregnancy ultrasound. The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of Dare Method and pregnancy ultrasound in estimating neonatal birth weight. This is a non-experimental cros sectional study, conducted at Hasta Husada Surgical Hospital in Malang – East Java – Indonesia between June and July 2018. Sample size used were 30 women in labor collected by quota sampling. Data obtained by measuring uterine height and abdominal circumference for Dare’s method, and EFW identification from pregnancy ultrasound result, then compared with the actual baby’s birth weight. Data analyzed using independent T-test with α <0,05. Based on the test result which showed p value 0,748, (p> α) which mean there is no difference between EFW comes from Dare Method and pregnancy ultrasound. The mean difference between EFW by Dare method and actual birth weight is 36.65 grams, while EFW by pregnancy ultrasound and actual birth weight is 28.83 grams. Concluded that midwives can use the Dare Method to determine EFW since it has the same accuracy with pregnancy ultrasound, besides, pregnancy ultrasound is not midwives’ competency.
