Socio-Economic Characteristics of the Makassar Community on the Self Medication Literation

Abstract

Background: socio-economic characteristics influence the number and characteristics of respondents to buy drugs at a pharmacy or drug store as a decision to do self-medication in dealing with complaints of pain experienced. Health literacy is defined as a degree of individuals who have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand information from basic health services and are then needed to make decisions about the right health situation even health literacy is closely related to behavior change when deciding to do self-medication. The health literacy indicator in this study was to analyze the ability of the community to know and understand drug use in terms of evaluation, analysis, calculation, interpretation, and location aspects. The aim of the study was to analyze several indicators of the socio-economic characteristics of the Makassar community towards self-medication literacy. Method: this type of research is a survey with a cross-sectional study method. This research was carried out at pharmacies and drug stores spread across 14 sub-districts of Makassar City, then divided into four regions, namely North, East, South, and West. The number of samples is 84 pharmacies and 21 drug stores, where each region consists of 21 pharmacies and 7 drug stores. Each pharmacy or store is taken 3 to 4 respondents. The sample size is 400 respondents. 306 for respondents who came to buy medicine at the pharmacy and 96 respondents who came to buy medicine at a drug store. The sampling technique is multistage random sampling. Statistical analysis and data processing using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The results showed that the health literacy of respondents who did self-medication was mostly in the category of both 21-30 years old, female sex, high school / equivalent education, having a job as an entrepreneur and earning less than Rp. 1,000,000. Conclusion: the results of the analysis of the relationship of health literacy score 3.97±0.83, and socioeconomic characteristics showed that the better the knowledge and understanding related to the use of drugs to be used on self-medication, the better health literacy of a person and the safety of the drug used.
